Michel Gondry

PIXELSURGEON INTERVIEW:
The Science of Sleep is a whimsical trip into a cut-and-paste wonderland fashioned from cardboard tubes, cellophane, and imagination, written and directed by Michel Gondry, the boundlessly inventive creator of award-winning films, videos and commercials.
French-born Gondry is a former drummer whose music video career began by directing films for the French rock band Oui Oui. The look of those videos caught the eye of Björk, who asked him to direct Human Behaviour. He then went on to create music videos for The White Stripes, Daft Punk and Radiohead.
His first film, Human Nature garnered mixed reviews, but his second movie, the acclaimed Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind brought him international recognition. The Science of Sleep is his third film.

Designer Spotlight: Akira Kobayashi
26/01/2007 by admin.
One of the world’s most accomplished designers of Western typefaces comes from an unlikely place. Akira Kobayashi began working at a phototype manufacturer in Japan where he had to draw hundreds of complex Japanese characters every week. He was soon turned on to Western alphabets and went on to win awards for his Latin typefaces. As Type Director for Linotype, Kobayashi works with legends of type design — Adrian Frutiger and Hermann Zapf — to update their most important faces: Avenir, Frutiger, Palatino, and Optima. Here we feature just a small slice of Kobayashi’s finest work.
fontshop.com publish here, his essay on the making of FF Clifford™. It is a wonderfully personal story about the struggles and discoveries of a five-year journey in type design. This text and its illustrations are published in the book “Made with FontFont”, which is filled with other histories and visual examples of the typefaces in FontShop’s house foundry. — SC
