House Industries - Case Studies/Portfolio work

Fonts… There’s a million of ‘em, but not many are as flippin’ cool as the ones made by House Industries. Founded in Delaware in 1993, House has become internationally known as a prolific type foundry and design studio. Their collaborative typefaces for pop artists Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, Shag, Coop and acclaimed architects Richard and Dion Neutra can be seen everywhere from magazines and billboards to TV. House founding partner Rich Roat will let you peek inside their incredible portfolio of work - from Monster Fonts to their line of textiles and furniture and beyond. Just think - they could have stopped with “CrackHouse”, then where would we be?

What is Graphic Design?

Graphic Design is the applied art of arranging image and text to communicate a message. It may be applied in any media, such as print, digital media, motion pictures, animation, product decoration, packaging, and signs. Graphic design as a practice can be traced back to the origin of the written word, but only in the late 19th century did it become identified as a separate entity.

The fundamental principles of design are alignment, balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, proportion, proximity, repetition, rhythm, unity, and white space.

Modern graphic design has evolved into a profession that is done almost entirely on computers. Common tools include Apple Macintosh computers, sketch pads, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, QuarkXPress, Macromedia Freehand and Fireworks, and many other software programs.

Designer Spotlight: Akira Kobayashi

One of the world’s most accomplished designers of Western typefaces comes from an unlikely place. Akira Kobayashi began working at a phototype manufacturer in Japan where he had to draw hundreds of complex Japanese characters every week. He was soon turned on to Western alphabets and went on to win awards for his Latin typefaces. As Type Director for Linotype, Kobayashi works with legends of type design — Adrian Frutiger and Hermann Zapf — to update their most important faces: Avenir, Frutiger, Palatino, and Optima. Here we feature just a small slice of Kobayashi’s finest work.

fontshop.com publish here, his essay on the making of FF Clifford™. It is a wonderfully personal story about the struggles and discoveries of a five-year journey in type design. This text and its illustrations are published in the book “Made with FontFont”, which is filled with other histories and visual examples of the typefaces in FontShop’s house foundry. — SC
